Acupuncture has been proven to effect the central nervous system through neurotransmitters, including serotonin. The release of this “feel good” hormone helps to calm symptoms of anxiety and improve feelings of wellbeing. Acupuncture also effects the parasympathetic nervous system by knocking the body out of the fight/flight response that can result from chronic stress. By retraining your body to access sensations of relaxation and calm, symptoms of depression that feed on stress hormones are eventually eliminated. Care and time are needed to allow the body to heal and rebalance on its’ own schedule. Treatments are often once a week but during times of crisis can be increased. Appointments decrease in a stepwise manner to prevent fall back into old patterns of reaction. Ultimately the goal is to retrain feedback loops into positive cycle which leads to an improved sense of well being.
